چکیده
IOLOGICAL damage resulting from radiation treatment has been studied in a B number of biological systems (LEA 1947; HOLLAENDER 1954; BARQ and ALEXANDER 1955). ZIRKLE (1954) discussed the implications of the observed influence of linear energy transfer upon biological damage. More recently BURCH ( 195 7) has discussed several problems of relative biological efficiency with respect to the methods used tQ characterize the quality of ionizing radiations. In Drmaphila, differences in the number of sex-linked recessive lethals recovered after X-radiation treatment of mature and immature germ cells were reported earlier by HARRIS (1929), HANSEN and HEYS (1929) and DEMEREC and KAUFMANN (194.1 ) . LUNNING (1952) reported differences in the effectiveness of X-radiation for dominant lethal damage in the spermatogenic cycle of Drosophila melanogaster. The characteristics of biological damage in various types of germ cells of DrosapGla uirdis subjected to fission neutrons and 14 Mev neutrons and comparisons a f the results obtained with neutrons to those producqd by ionizing radiations have been discussed in previous papers (ALEXANDER 1958a,

RADIATION DAMAGE IN THE DEVELOPING GERM CELLS OF Drosophila Virilis.
Since 1945 a great many studies have been made to determine the relation between the amount of damage induced by ultraviolet or ionizing radiations and the chemistry of the cell. One important biological activity which involves both chemical and genetic changes in the cell is the process of maturation with gamete formation. Alexander' has presented new data and reviewed older experiments which ...
متن کاملDose Rate Effects in the Developing Germ Cells of Male Drosophila.
ENETIC damage was not modified by variations in the dose rate of radiation when mature sperm of Drosophila were treated (MULLER 1940), nor were changes in the rate or in the fractionation of radiation dose effective in influencing biological damage in mature sperm of Drosophila virilis when, treatments were given in atmospheres of oxygen or nitrogen (ALEXANDER and BERGENDAHL 1962). However, LUN...
متن کاملTrack detection on the cells exposed to high LET heavy-ions by CR-39 plastic and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase (TdT)
Background: The fatal effect of ionizing radiation on cells depends on Linear Energy Transfer (LET) level. The distribution of ionizing radiation is sparse and homogeneous for low LET radiations such as X or γ, but it is dense and concentrated for high LET radiation such as heavy-ions radiation. Material and Methods: Chinese hamster ovary cells (CHO-K1) were exposed to 4 Gy Fe-ion 2000 keV/...
متن کاملImmature Teratoma of Nasal Septum: A Case Report
Introduction: Teratomas are neoplastic tumors derived from totipotent germ cells containing a wide assortment of tissues originating from all three germ cell layers. Teratomas can be mature or immature depending on the presence of immature tissues; typically neuroepithelial tissue. Immature teratomas can be oncologically benign or malignant, and can be divided into three grades with increasingl...
متن کاملThe production of chromosome interchanges in Drosophila virilis.
ULLER'S original discovery that ionizing radiations are capable of 141 breaking the chromosome thread was based on investigations carried out with Drosophila melanogaster. But in spite of the numerous studies which have been undertaken using this animal, comparatively little progress has been made in the last twenty years in determining the precise manner in which these breaks are formed and th...
